In an industry filled with names that reflect Teutonic traditions, alpine splendour, or brave and furry woodland predators, our company is named after a multi-tonne quartzite glacial deposit located outside of Okotoks, Alberta. This "big rock" in the middle of the prairie is known as an erratic, and we think it fits perfectly with our mission to brew deliberately different beer.

Did you know Alberta has a motto? It’s “Strong and Free.” Now that is a bold motto worth toasting. That’s the spirit we’ve been instilling into Wild Rose since 1996, when we launched our brewery to free ourselves from the tyranny of boring beer. We make delicious beer in small batches, craft brewed with natural ingredients and the spirit that makes Alberta wild, strong and free. Problem is, there isn’t enough to go around. Very popular stuff. Even with the larger brewery, we’re guarding the supply, so you can only get it in Alberta (too bad rest of the world). So if you have a wild side that needs to be satisfied, an independent spirit that thirsts for something different - and you’re in Alberta - then it’s time you explored the wild frontier of beer.

Serendipity. That’s how we describe how we came together to form a community brewery in Calgary. One person with 20 years of experience ought to be enough to start making beer, but we're seven guys with over 150 years of beer experience, and many of us have passed up opportunities to start breweries in the past. Never felt right. But when we sat down together we couldn't help but notice we had a footing in every side of the brewing business: brewing, plant operations, finance, business management, sales and marketing. We stirred all that together and look what came out: a nice balanced brewery and a force to do a bit of good for the Calgary community. And, umm, tasty beer.

Our founder Michael Lanigan started Brewsters in 1989, way before small-batch brewing was the trend it is today. Now, as a second-generation family business, our batches aren’t as small as they once were. But the idea that got us started is the idea that still drives us today. It’s a pretty simple formula, really – combine beer that’s brewed with passion with an outstanding dining experience. That formula has led us to where we are today – one of Alberta’s longest-standing local breweries, with 11 restaurants across the province.

Cold Garden Beverage Company is a Calgary-based microbrewery. A love of craft beer and a passing comment in a university classroom planted the idea years ago and the concept has been growing ever since. The brewery has put down roots in the vibrant community of Inglewood, hoping to breathe new life into what was once the brewing district of Calgary. Cold Garden brings a casual and eclectic vibe to the community, along with a lineup of traditional and more...eccentric beers.

The term Goat Locker refers to an area below deck in old wooden naval ships where they kept the goat. They brought the goat on board to provide fresh milk and cheese for the crew on long sea voyages, during a time when modern day preservation methods were not available. As well as milk and cheese, the goats were perfect animals to bring onboard. They would eat anything, including the food scraps, had a knack for surviving in many circumstances, and never got sea sick.

As a way to entice people to join the navy they were promised beer rations. They kept the overflow barrels of ale in the Goat Locker, way below deck, where it was nice and cool. The crew in what little leisure time they had realized that the officers would never bother them in the Goat Locker. This led to the Goat Locker becoming a mess hall of sorts, where the crew could relax, enjoy a few pints, and hang out with some goats.

The term is still in use in the navy today. While there is no longer a use to bring a goat on board, the legend of the Goat Locker lives on. We want to keep this tradition alive and help you find your own Goat Locker; whether it’s your neighbourhood pub or your garage. Your Goat Locker is anywhere you can relax and share a few pints with friends, new and old!

We built Annex Ale Project because we can make a contribution to beer culture in Calgary. It’s pretty simple — we love what craft brewers are doing with barley and hops and water and hard work, and we need a space to make our own humble, yet stoutly idiosyncratic contribution.
